The United Arab Emirates has announced that it is closely monitoring the developments surrounding Pavel Durov, founder and CEO of Telegram, following his arrest by French authorities. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on the French government to immediately provide consular services to Durov. Durov, a Russian-born businessman and UAE citizen, was arrested Saturday at Paris airport as part of the judicial investigation. The indictment includes 12 criminal offenses related to the Telegram messenger. The arrest has sparked backlash from the digital currency community and privacy advocates. In response, Telegram announced that its CEO had nothing to hide. Under French law, Durov can be detained for questioning for up to four days. Telegram's user base surpassed 950 million in July, thanks in part to the popularity of cryptocurrency-based games on the platform.
