Telegram CEO Pavel Durov’s phone was allegedly hacked in 2017; a year before he met with French President Emmanuel Macron. A joint operation was conducted between France and the United Arab Emirates to hack Durov’s iPhone. A well-informed source told the Wall Street Journal that the reason for this action was the UAE’s concern about Telegram being used to recruit troops and plan attacks. Durov was arrested at the Paris airport on August 24. In 2018, Macron asked Durov to move Telegram’s headquarters to Paris, but Durov rejected the offer and applied for French citizenship. Balaji Srinivasan, an American businessman, believes that Telegram can claim its CEO. This event has raised concerns about the future of privacy technologies and Web3. With over 900 million monthly active users, Telegram is the fourth largest messaging app in the world.
