A new scientific paper shows how Bitcoin mining can reduce methane emissions. The research explains that Bitcoin miners can use landfill gas-to-energy systems. This process absorbs methane, a greenhouse gas, and converts it into usable energy. The researchers argue that Bitcoin mining has the right incentive structure for long-term, capital-intensive projects. This incentive structure can also be used to recycle unused energy, such as from decommissioned oil and gas wells. In 2023, MARA launched a methane-powered Bitcoin mining project in Utah in collaboration with Nodal Power. Additionally, a 2023 study showed that Bitcoin mining operations could reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by about 8% by 2030.
